Steam is quite an important platform for so many games that when the servers are down, a lot of players are "in pain". If you're wondering if there is a problem with your internet connection or the steam servers are down, well, don't worry, your internet works just fine. There appears to be a problem connecting the steam servers, we don't know why since they website isn't working either. At the moment steam plaftorm has been down for about 1 hour, hopefully they will solve this problem quickly so we can start gaming.
Also, don't worry that you might have forgotten your password because, unless you have a really bad memory, the problem is not you, but the steam platform.

It might look like steam is installing updates, but it will still not work (at least not now), so don't get your hopes up too much. There have been problems before, they were solved pretty quickly, I'm just hoping this time there isn't something too serious.
In case your game is not starting (Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Team Fortress 2, Left for Dead, Left for Dead 2, etc) you have 3 options:
1. Retry connection and hope it will work!
2. Start offline mode and go single player if game supports it ( works in Dota 2 and many others)
3. Quit and go QQ!
